wind

Post by kodiak_vs »

Quick question for you. We had trouble getting yotes last saturday, we got a yote and one fox. We seen one other yote that day as well. Well my question is that midmorning the wind picked up a bit, and we didnt see anymore that day. And a few of my friends are blaming it on the wind, saying that yotes dont like to run in the wind, i say bull sh*t. Just wondering what you people think. I guess if i was getting shot at i would run in the wind as well. We also hunt differently than most people i guess. We just shoot out sloughs, groves and whatever looks like would hold them yotes, and then wait for them to come out, it works very well.

I think when it comes to calling high winds put the coyotes on edge due to their senses being affected. In your style of hunting shouldn't make a difference

You will condition some of them by doing this and sooner or later you will have to get out of the truck and walk them out of the sloughs. Here the coyotes in the CRP are used to the shooting from pheasant and deer hunters and will lay tite or move off to one side and let the hunters pass.. These coyotes are adapting and learning to survive..

On another note i don't know if you heard about the guy who got shot by some road hunters that where shooting at geese or thought they where geese and killed a hunter that was in a ground blind..
When i'm out calling i will have someone drop me off and leave and then i walk in to make a stand, there are others that also do it this way so you better watch where you shoot... Nows days there is no such thing as a accident, you shoot some one you will go to jail.....Shooting in sloughs and groves has been around for a long time but its a bad practice to do, sooner or later someone 's gonna get hurt..

When i was younger and a little stupider and didn't know how to call we use to shoot up sloughs to get the fox up and running with a 22 but we did make sure that we just shot into the ground in the ditch to see if we could get one up and running.

I agree i would certaily watch where you're shooting.

Are you making drives for them?

i dont know where you get off by telling us how to hunt. We hunt all of our own ground. within the group got prolly 4000 acres of prime yote ground. So wwe always know that there is no one in there hunting. We shoot towards the ground with the bullets as well. Let me know if you would like to know more about it. The yotes always come out, we never walk.

tim, forgot to mention something. Think you will like the numbers we and other groups around here get. We have around 50 yotes at this time since december. A good friend of mine and his group have around 40. And another friend and his crew are closing in on 100, i think they have around 90 right now. And we all do the same thing by shooting things out.

How big of a group are you running? I'm assuming most of the coyotes you're getting are running shots coming across the county roads (since you don't walk) that is a lot of tough shooting a guy could really get good at those running coyotes running with a crew like that.

I don't think TA was telling you how to hunt (he hunts in a similar way) just mentioning some of the things to watch out for.

Those numbers are fairly impressive however 100 coyotes for 10-12 man crews is only 8-10 coyotes per guy. Keep that in mind this is the reason that number comparing can be tough from one area or hunter to another.

I don't know how many guys kodiak_vs has in his crew.
The crew i belong to consists of 5-8 hunters with it being mostly 5, some of the guys have day jobs..LOL
Out of the 8 guys 3 of them are retired and one is on oxygen due to working around to much grain dust.

Prairie Ghost you are correct on the number of coyotes killed by a crew, there can be a big difference from area to area with how many coyotes that area holds or how they are hunted. As for the number of personnel kills the trackers usaully get the most compared to the blockers and yes most shots are running shots anywhere from 40 yds out to 500yds on avr.. There are also days when the whole crew can't be together to hunt so some of us hunt alone or with a partner from time to time.. We have another crew close by that kills close to the same numbers as us but they use different tactics, they have more in the crew and they use a snowmobile to chase coyotes to the road and also have a black chevy blazer to chase them when they don't have enough snow..LOL
In some cases the coyote dose'nt want to leave a section so a tracker may go back and fourth through the section for hours or we may send another in and try to cut the coyote off .. There are alot of different ways to do it and we found through trial and error its best to do it all legal and try not to rile the coyote up to much..

On another note i willbe makeing another coyote calling trip west this month and will hunt a day or two with randy roede and Jeff R if he is'nt to busy...

Prarie Ghost, are crew usually varies from weekend to weekend. But usually is around 5-12 guys. Try and have about 5 trucks and suburbans. Send one out to the grove or slough or whatever, and shoot it out and get them to the road. We are very good shooters not many get by us. Most of us have DPMS AR-15's and a few mini -14's. And we only usually hunt once a week. usually on saturdays, usually a local bar or someplace holds hunts. let me know anything else you would like to know. :D

This is the last time im going to post this: You guys have now clue who else is seeing these posts!!! This is a public forum for many to read!! If you get caught playing the game illegaly you can rest assure that these post will contribute to it!! There are many ways to hunt coyotes but if your way involves running them with vehicles, which is illegal in minnesota by the way, i suggest you keep the method to yourself!! If thats the way you hunt them thats fine. You can explain on how you hunt them but keep the parts about running them to roads with vehicles private. you guys also say your great shots and not much gets by you; but are you shooting this coyote the first shot every time, or does it take several consecutive shots to dial it in??? Also is it one guy shooting at a time or is it 3 to 4 of you shooting semi automatic weapons at one time???
