How much is too much wind????
Im sure it might be different from the Midwest to the west in terms of how much wind is too much to hunt coyotes in. My forecast here in Indiana for this weekend is high temps in the low 30's and periods of snow with the wind being 18 mph from the south on Saturday and 13 mpn from the west on Sunday. Is this wind too much? I was going to stick to distress calls since its bitter cold right now (-7, I know, not as bad as some of you guys in the Dakotas) but moving into the low 30's for the weekend though I dont think we will hit that, more like mid 20's. Im looking to set up being upwind and facing downwind, is this good or should I opt for the crosswind instead?

Here in Oklahoma the wind blows daily so 15-20mph winds are not 'winds', but lite breezes
As a rule the wind has to be blowing 30+mph before I stay home.
I usually sit up crosswind, but that's just my way. A lot would depend on the terrain and the direction you expect the yotes to come in from.
Good luck.

Keep the wind in your face and there is no such thing as too much wind. Yeah there are days that the coyotes dont seem to respond as well when the wind is howling at 30mph or better. When you know a coyote is in the area you make a stand and then move up and over another ridge or two and make another stand. When its really windy you just need to get right on top of them in order to get them to respond. Just my 2 cents.

Like was said they can still be called in wind.
Two years ago my most proud coyote kill was one I shot when the wind was blowing 35+. It was really blustery that day. We worked an area like lyonch said and kept going over ridges and calling. A big 34 lb. male came in. I shot him at 60 yards with my 243. He was rubbed real bad and I got 5 bucks for him put up. But it was rewarding knowing I got him on a windy day.

If im hunting for fun, and the winds blowing 25+, I stay home.
Getting coyotes to hear ya gets tougher, longer shots get tougher, and it just takes some of the "fun factor" out of it.
Now if its a contest or something, well, suck it up and drive on!

Not all coyotes, they can be called and shot, its how bad do you want to kill a coyote and how hard do you want to work at it.
Terry If I remember right, in the minot tournament you shot a coyote, and the wind had to be around 25mph or more. That coyote didn't win!

Well Im sure money opportunities make people go against their normal judgement.
Well the wind question came up because I was thinking like deer hunting a little, which I've quickly realized, nearly everything I know has to be thrown out the window and have a new midset with coyotes. Im up for the challenge.
Im heading out tomorrow and hopefully I can call a few in and put the hammer down on them.

Where I live on the Sweet Water River in Wyoming it's not uncommon to have 35-40 mph gusts with 20-25 mph sustained winds.( It's really a daily occurence) I generally just change tactics. I get up-wind and get on the river when it's frozen and just make stands about every 250 yards or so. I called one in ths morning and got him to 15 yards and took him with my shotgun.
