calling advice?

Post by lamar_hunter »

Hey everybody im new to the forum and really like it. I have a johnny stewart prey master i think it is. i have a few different cards. I was wondering what you guys have had the best luck with on this call if you have it. Once you start calling can it help to switch to a different call or should you stick with the same one. And also i was calling with it yesterday and i had been on a stand for about an hour hitting the cottontail distress every 5-10 mins. when i was about to leave just for the hell of it i hit coyote pup distress. it wasnt 15 seconds and i see a dog about 400 yrds running right for me. it stopped at about 250 yrds in a bad position that i couldnt shoot. granted i didnt have very good cover but how can you get them to come in closer once they have hung up like that? im sorry if this topic has been gone over before im a noob.

the best thing to do to get a coyote to come in from hanging up like that where im from (western ND) is to switch to a low sound prey noise, like squeeking ur lips. trust me they can hear it if theres relatively low wind, other sounds will work too. just remember the wind direction, low or NO movement and good camo, if ur busted ur busted and theres not going to be a good chance of u calling him in closer.

When you had that coyote coming in with coyote in distress turn it off right away or they zero in on ya and hang up or circle to fast

Amen to what Tbush said. This morning 18 below with a nasty south wind about 15 mph.Set up in an abandoned farm along a lake.Started a mouse distress call turned on low.Second series I look out across the lake and 3/4s mile away there are 5 loping across toward me.Would have bet the farm they couldn't have heard me that far cross wind.
They are spread out unfortunately.About half mile out they start slowing down.Walk, sit, walk, sit, look at each other, walk, then a couple drop way behind, then one really turns down wind, then one gets to about 375 yds(broadside),then greed enters, then 2 start leaving, then moron me instead of shooting lets greed win and I turn on Coyote pup distress(been working well in similar situations),then all run back.I don't pop a single cap.
I freeze my ---- off for 20 more minutes til they leave the lake and get out of sight-then sneak out.Tomorrow!Got all day to figure out how to F it up then. :(

My 'mouse'distress is on my E-caller.Labeled 'mouse/vole distress'.I also normally have the little 'squeaker'taped to the side of my scope.
Terry,I'm so upset I can't talk about it.seems I do one of those a year.FIVE for gods sake! Not likely to happen again for a long while.

I have the Johnny Stewart Preymaster wireless caller. I really like it. I have had good luck with it this year. It has called in 12 coyotes for us and has resulted in 6 kills. I really have only used two main sounds on it. I really need to start varying my sequences. I have bought a few new cards recently that I think have some great variety on them so I am going to do that from now on.

The main sound I have used to call in all my coyotes this year is a rabbit sound on one of the cards.

Oh and I use it like I woudl a mouth call. turn it on for a while, sit silent for a while. Repeat. We set it out a ways to direct the coyotes attention away from us.

I have had good luck with lip squeaks. keep it quiet though you don't want to blow them out. it is amazing how good of hearing coyotes have.

Sometimes with a hung up coyote it is best to do nothing at all. curiousity at times will finish the deal. other times if possible to sneak out of the area, come at them from a different direction and set up again. This is where location can be key. Need to make sure you can give a coyote a comfortable approach. A real obvious situation is like trying to call a coyote across a river.

I agree with coyotehunter i have had some luck just sitting there quiet and waiting them out. They usually come slow but a lot of times they will start to finally come. I have had them just turn and walk away after waiting there for and extra 30minutes too though  If they are a long ways out say 7-800 yds or more i like to try to sneak out and then sneak up on them and shoot them or try calling from a different location for them

Went back the next morning.Went in in the dark.Rare situation for the Dakotas, dead calm. And noisy as hell. One of those mornings you can hear a pheasant a mile away.Figured I'd spook them getting in and I did.Probably a mistake but I'm staying away a day or two.Tough area.Hills but wide open pasture. We have the dreaded 'crust'and noise.need an inch of soft stuff on top.Absent wind, they know when you park that trouble is around.Even if you park a half mile away. Then each step is a squeaky scream. This morning I seriously thought of putting socks over my boots. At minus 12 though,I don't have socks big enough to go over my clod hoppers.

Your right dcoy, it is almost impossible to get into an area without being busted when you have a crusty snow. We did have some luck yesterday under that situation. We walked in to the area we wanted to call and set up. About 3ooyds down in front of me were some deer and when I set down and started glassing they had me pin-pointed already. I think what saved us as a little bit later , the wind died down and we were able to get one coyote in. You could here a pin drop just before dark and that is when my partner Pat shot him. A big male. Here is a picture.
