BIRDS & COYOTES- Calling insight needed.

As a newbie I have calling/ set-up questions regarding the various birds that relate to coyotes whether coyote prey like flicker/ woodpecker, pheasants/ gamebirds or co-scavengers such as Whiskey Jacks, Magpies, Cowbirds.

1) Birds coyotes eat: Please share insight on use of DISTRESSED BIRD CALLS. What is useful? Experiences/stories, When to use?

2) Birds that relate to/ travel with coyotes for food: Please share insight on SCAVENGER BIRDS you notice while calling coyotes like Magpies, Cowbirds, Ravens... Do you use those bird sounds? Do the scavenger birds respond to distress calls (rabbits, etc)? Which birds do you see most often? How often do they appear without coyotes, before seeing the coyotes, or travel with the coyotes?

Not sure if there has been a study or not. But I have seen magpie's travel with a coyote.

I've called a lot of coyotes using both flicker and woodpecker distress. In the areas that it worked best I don't think I ever saw a flicker or woodpecker. I think any bird distress might peak there interest and be worth a try.

Not sure if there has been a study or not. But I have seen magpie's travel with a coyote.

I think it was coyotehunter who said this at a tournament but I can't remember. Maybe he can correct me here.
It was something like "not every coyote has a magpie, but every magpie has a coyote". Or did I hear that somwhere else?

Pilgrim, I have had great results using the woodpecker in D. on my fox pro, have used the partidge in D. but not very much. Itry to use sounds that are relative to the area, calling woods, wooded draws etc... Woodpecker, If I'm in an area that shows cotton tail sign I'll use that and on and on. ASfar as birds coming to the call seems like the magpie comes more to the rabbit sounds than the birds (I'll pay more atten. to it now) and if a magpie shows up and I can keep it around I'll sit longer on that stand! I've had owls sit right next to me and hawks swoop in and leave, as far as other birds not really mostly magpies and it seems that if the maggie flys right in no yote but if it holds up and dances from tree to tree well then I start thinking coyote,

I don't know what birds coyotes target. I don't think they have the cat like moves to be birding to much they seem more like run and gun to me, never saw feathers in coyote crap before just fur type stuff. but fox crap feathers all the time Just my 2 cents. maybe these guys that do den work can tell us what they see??

Crows are another bird that coyotes relate to. Coyotes quite often come to crow calls thinking the crows are on a dead critter of something. It gives the coyote a little safe re-enforcement . In the missouri breaks, there are lots of crows and magpies and I know guys that use crow call quite often. I have had crows come to rabbit distress , but most of he time it is magpies. When they come and perch in a tree by you , it is a good idea to start looking around for a coyote or coyotes.
