Afternoon Hunt

Post by Optimax90 »

Got up this morning with the idea to stay home a get stuff done today   I made it untill noon, than my wife kicked my crabby but out of the house

First stand, new spot that I located about three weeks ago. A minute or two into the call, I picked one up about 3/4 mile out, and coming to the call. I have been known to get so focused on one, that another will sneak in from the other direction and steal my lunch and leave  So I put a look out in all directions, with one eye on the first one. Two minutes after I spoted the first one, another appeared @ 75 yards to my left :o (first one was on my right) He came on a fast walk and hit the skidds and meet his match @ 32 yards!! thanks to my 870 W/"Dead-Coyote" Got on the Ki-Yi within seconds and the other one was still coming... 15 minutes later he showed up a little farther right than expected  Busted me and bolted never had a good shot, I'll get him next time :) The coyote I shot was a large male 36lbs. and had good fur :)
Second and third stands were a bust.. The fourth stand I managed to get one to come down a creek bottom and stop @ 510yrds :( No way was getting any closer, and my rifle is getting a new barrel :( so I backe dout and save him for another day.
Fifth stand, was a spot that I have been to four time before and every time I go there, as soon as start calling they start barking and howling at me?? I guess my set up is wrong?? They spot me on the way in?? They have had pressure?? I don't know. But this time I made a longer walk in, and set up in a weird possition and got all the way through my calling with no howling?? I was going to give it about three or four minutes than try howling my self, when from behind me, to my right, there he was @ 40 yards:oops: He came in behind me an I figured I never had a chance. The wind was blowing (light) from left to right and I had a big rock on my right side, I was able to easy down and grabb the 870. I gave him a lip squeak and he started flanking down wind, as soon as he turned his head I swung and and flattend him out @ 21yrds :D Two coyotes with shotgun in one night 8) :D This coyote was also a adult male, not as big 32lbs. but is very blond with alittle red to him, kinda cool looking.
Going to be hard to go to work in the morning, hope the wind is blowing and rain, thats about the only way I can last all day :D

Thanks guys.
Its amazing what info you guys are sharing with everyone, it is really helpfull if you pay attention and put it to the feild. I surprise myself evrytime I go out, I go through the entire stand before I get into it and keep reminding myself of all the things to look for, and all the things that have happened before. And its working :) I've only missed two coyotes this year that I shot at, and I'm not sure what happened with that?? But my chances have been why better cause I know what to look for and what to expect. Do your homework and pay attention :)
