Coyotes & Blue Jays

Post by wizbang »

Hey, all. This might be a stupid question, but I have to ask.

Anyone experienced how blue jays react to coyotes? My family does alot of bow hunting and we swear blue jay make certain vocalizations when a deer is coming. I've experienced the same this on a deer drive with coyotes too-- a blue jay comes flying out making a certain noise and a coyote was right behind him about 5 seconds.

Anyone ever seen how a blue jay reacts when a coyote comes in? Ever seen them both at once?

I do not see many blue jays on stand but I have noticed some really interesting things with Ravens over the years.

I was hunting over what was left of my buck's gutpile late last December and a pair of jays were really teritorial with the gutpile. They'd swoop down and pick up a piece of bloody snow and chase off anything else that came by the gutpile. Seems paying attention to jays might be a good way to locate a carcass or coyote kill maybe??

What have you seen with ravens?

One thing I do pay attention to is that when I am calling and see Ravens come in, I keep my head down. I have had them flare when they see me sitting there. The caw and leave along with all of there friends. I think they are giving a warning cry that scares off the coyotes as much as it does other Ravens.

Amen to that.
In some areas if you're scaring pheasants as you enter,my advice is set up and call quick or risk seeing coyotes exiting out of range. They survive by being tuned in to all disturbances IMO.
Ditto on deer.
