Full Moon

Post by Jeck »

Hey guys, I am new to the site and relatively new to coyote hunting. This is my first year of actually calling for them.

In your guys' experience, does the full moon make it tougher to call in coyotes during the day? Is it best calling during the new moon phase or does it matter either way? I was having pretty good luck a week and half before the full moon. But, I went out all day yesterday and didn't call in anything. Thanks for the advice.

I believe hunting the new moon would be better with a amber light. with out a lite I think the full moon is the only way possible. does your state allow lights at night. if so what type?

I think Jeck is refering to daytime calling and moon conditions ..
I never paid much attension to moon phases just went calling when i could.
Last year there was some talk on moon phases so i kept track of my hunts into the Dakotas and what the moon phases where. I called prior to a full moon and dureing a full moon and also after and did'nt see any difference in the response of the coyotes. The main thing is you have tobe where they are to call them..
This spring and summer i have been out at nite just locateing coyotes and found that on a full moon nite the coyotes don't respond or respond very well when the moon is full and straight up. As i continued to move through the area and howling i noticed the moon was starting to drop and cloud cover was moveing in and the coyotes where starting to respond to my howls. So i think at nite a full moon may make a difference if calling at that time.. I don't have enough info at this time so i can't be 100% posative..

well then, not sure if there is much to gain from only hunting certain moon phases. I am sure there are a ton of opinions on the subject. I have read one study pertaining to moon phases and was specifically written in reference to aerial hunting. I did say that the hunting was better after a full moon.
