I've got several pictures of fox dens, but it'll be a day or two before I can get to them to post....did you take a picture of the den you found?

Re: coyote den
better yet, go back and take a picture of it. Depending on where you are, they shouldn't even be thinking about digging a den yet, but it could be an old den from previous years, it could be an old fox den, or badger hole. Take a look around and see if there are any tracks in the area yet. If so take a good look at them and if you can't tell take a picture of it with something of standard measurement ie. a hat, ruler, tape measure etc.
Dens vary in size quite a bit depending on how active they were.

Re: coyote den
I was told by a few people that you are to never call it a den until you reach in there and pull some pups out
Until you confirm all you know is that it is a hole in the ground!!

Re: coyote den
Xdeano,
When do coyotes make dens? And if they only have dens during certain parts of the year, where do they sleep the rest of the time? I am in southern AL and I ask because we recently found what we assumed to be a coyote den. It was a smallish hole dug around a tree root with dog tracks going in and out. I say smallish because I have yet to see a coyote up close and always pictured them to live in caves I guess (clearly I'm new to coyotes
).

Re: coyote den
they spend very little time in side a hole through out the year. they will start putting puts in the hole about the end of march through middle of april. Some may be sooner and other later but that 2 weeks is were most of your pups will be born. this can vary some from region to region. Most of the time they are just sleeping in any spot that will give them some shelter from the weather. That is not to say they will not crawl into a hole to get out of the wind and snow but for the most part they just get into some heavy brush and hunker down.

Re: coyote den
It can depend on where you live, but in southern Mn. and parts of Iowa coyotes use a hole quit often or a culvert next to a drainage ditch..

Re: coyote den
Haven't been anywhere for a while....when the ground is froze too hard, I don't hunt....unless there is somebody willing to go along and help dig. Not worth losing my dog....so....I'm trying to find some barns with coon problems now!Tbush wrote:I'd bet that Daryl is right on the money..... unless Wyojrt has been there????
One thing I have learned hunting with the terriers...I never speak in absolutes....Mother Nature is not bound by rules....anything is possible. I had folks that had been digging to terriers for many moons tell me you'd never find a fox in the ground in the summer.....huh.....in the 20-30 I've taken in the last couple of years, many have been when the days have been in the 80's or 90's. I was told once that you NEVER find more than one adult fox in a den...huh...I've taken 2 out of the same hole in the same dig on a couple of occasions. I've been told that rabbits never dig a hole....huh....hubby and I have sat and watched them dig....not to mention I've read stories from TRUE terriermen talking of fox taking residence in rabbit warrens...DUG BY RABBITS. Was told there were no possum in Wyoming....and the same folks telling me that informed me that the photos I'd taken of tracks I found in the snow were possum....huh.....about 15 miles from my house. Hunting with the terriers has taught me that dens of different animals can appear different from the outside, but you never really truly know what is in the ground. I try to always take a good whiff before letting a dog in to try to be sure there isn't a skunk in there.....
Wow...sorry...kinda off on a tangent there....not sure what was going on....

Re: coyote den
Well...not that it means anything, but I'm drooling and chomping at the bit to drop a dog in it for a fox or coon.....
