Calling sequence????

Post by DakotaYota »

So I was wondering what types of sequences you guys use around these parts. In alaska I mainly used prey in distress. But I hear a lot of people use howling first here. This week I have tried some female coyote howls to start with and later I throw in a distress. Normally I do this....Howl for about 7 minutes pause for about 3 and distress for 3-4 and just sit and wait. IS this similiar to what you guys are doin? During the day do you stick to just distress until just before dark? Fem invitation calls should be OK startin in about January around here right? Just wonderin whats successful in these parts. Seems like there are plenty of yote howling back but the boundaries must not really be set yet cause very few have come in.

Now I use strictly distress and pup distress. I mix it up with jackrabbit and cottontail. I will not howl until January hits.

It can depend on what i'm after, yoy or adults.. If i'm after yoy or just looking to call in both youg and old then i don't use coyote vocals. Howling can scare off the young coyotes if they have not established there own terr. and some that have maybe spooked..
If you are going to howl i just use one or two howls on a stand and then distrees sounds, sometimes the howl first or last, it depends..

I don't think it is ever the wrong time of year to howl. I just use higher pitched pup type howls throughout the fall. I have had yoy coyotes come running to just a couple lone howls on a lot of occasions. I may start out with a few howls or go right to distress sounds. It varies for me by stand, time of day etc.
I've got a sickness and the only cure is more coyotes
