Clarification

Post by lyonch »

Well to make a long story short, i got myself into a little bit of a pissing match on another forum. The individual claimed that he has been trapping since the 70's and has trapped and kill 100's of coyotes, he also claimed that the pictures he posted was of a female coyote. He stated that he can what the sex of a coyote when he is rolling up to it. I do not doubt his abilities or credentials one bit, but i did disgree with some things that were stated. What i want to know is what you guys think. I want an honest answer to what you see and nothing sugar coated!!!

The questions i would like to see answered are:

How many different coyotes are there in the 5 pictures?
Does the coyote in the first 3 pictures have 3 legs or 4 legs?
What is the sex of the coyote(s)?
If the coyote pictured in the first three pictures were to be trapped with a leghold trap, would he be east to catch with standard practices?

Looks like 3 legs.

Its comeing into a bait station so I would say yes..
Since the pic.s are'nt the best its just a rough guess.. :D

I know nothing about trapping... but I would say a three legged coyote would be about 25% harder to catch in a leg hold trap using standard practices since he has 75% of the legs of a normal coyote.

Also, my guess is two coyotes. The last two pics look like the same coyote to me. But I am no expert.

The only part I can answer is that it appears that there are 2 coyotes in the 5 pics.

i see 1 3 legged coyote and there may be something in the background (eye-shine) in the first 3 pics. can't determine sex on any of them. can't answer about the chances of catching him again as i'm not a trapper

The first coyote still appears to have three legs and it cleaned up on what ever it was eating or took it along when it left.

Its a toss up with the last two coyotes but by looking at the tracks in the snow it appears that more than two came in to feed on the bait so a third couldbe involved. The last ones neck seems fuller and also the space between the ears looks different as well..

hell if I know....ON adult coyotes, most of the time as I am walking up to them or if they are coming in on a call I know what they are......I don't know what you got there, not going to spend any time trying to figure it out, it a fools errand.........trapping 3 legged coyotes is no different than catching 4 legged coyotes. I do not start out by doing something different because it is a 3 legged coyote. I certainly do not change my trap placement specifically for that.

I think its the same coyote in the first three pic. The bad leg is just held up higher in the third pic. Same dog in the last two pics. I dont know for sure on the sex but I would guess both were males. Older dog in the first three and younger in the third and fourth. Just a guess though. Looks like the bad leg was probly shot off and they came into bait that was put their by a human beings their is a trail cam on it so I would say should be just as easy as any other adult to catch but who the hell knows what other trails and tribulations it could have went through. I never set a trap with the intentions of back footing one so I don't see what I could be done different to catch this one.

Same coyote in he first 3 pics. 3 legs. 1 probably shot off as its pretty high. Just guessing by the way. I would think he would be easier to catch in a trap being that he's probably not the fastest hunter  The first 3 pics looks to have 2 sets of eyes and old 3 leg. Last 2 pics look like the same dog to me. Like I said just taking a shit in the dark guess.

Here is my take on it.

The coyote in pics 1-3 are the same coyote. The coyote in pics 4 and 5 could be the same coyote (no obvious proof stating other wise). Besides me thinking it is a 3 legged coyote, the reactions to them are completely different. Yes there could have been a noise that the coyote in pics 4 and 5 reacted to or something of that nature, but it seems to be kind of a coincidence (sp) that when the infrad lights whent off he/she kind of spooked from it.

I do not know what the sex of either coyote is. If there is some way a person can tell what the sex of a coyote is by only looking at a picture, sign me up for that class so i can analyze pictures with 100% certainty

I also firmly bilieve that the coyote in pics 1-3 are a 3 legged coyote.

I also personally feel this coyote would have been missed by standard practices of trap placement if for example you were to follow mark junes videos (back 9" off set to the right 2"-3"). the coyote in the first three pics from what i can tell does not move his front right leg and/or his back leg when working the bait. I also took into consideration that he might have moved the bait pile with his right font leg first. The question i have with that statement, is that i have never witnessed any k-9 moving something of that nature forward with there front feet. Most of them will pull the object to them, or role it with their nose forward. My assumption is that the coyote rolled the bait forward with it's nose and walked off with bait to eat at a later spot.

First of all I'd like to say "THANK GOD FOR COYOTEHUNTER.NET". And thank the gods I found this place and havn't strayed away from it.
O.K with that out of the way.
I don't think anybody had ever questioned anything that guy has posted. You asked a simple question and he FLIPPED out  I dont think he has caught half the coyotes he claims too just by how defensive he got. That was comical. Like a new kid in school called out the bully and whipped his ass in front of all his toadies. What a jackass. Good job Chris.

P.S. :x :x BACK OFF
