ND Coyote Bounty - Senate Bill No. 2224 Defeated

Post by Jeck »

Check out the Senate Bill No. 2224 for North Dakota.

I can't believe they got 3 Senators and 2 Representatives to introduce it. It can't possibly go anywhere... but it is scary what some elected officials come up with. It wouldn't take long to fill the 2,000 coyote limit.

11.0605.01000
Sixty-second
Legislative Assembly
of North Dakota

Introduced by

Senators Klein, Bowman, Heckaman
Representatives Brandenburg, DeKrey

A BILL for an Act to provide for a coyote bounty; and a statement of legislative intent.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF NORTH DAKOTA:

SECTION 1. COYOTE BOUNTY - GUIDELINES. The director shall pay a bounty of one
hundred dollars for each coyote taken after the effective date of this Act until two thousand
coyotes are taken. The director may establish guidelines for the determination and payment of
bounties under this section.

SECTION 2. LEGISLATIVE INTENT. It is the intent of the legislative assembly that two
hundred thousand dollars of the wildlife services line item contained in section 1 of Senate Bill
No. 2017 be used to pay coyote bounties as authorized in section 1 of this Act. The director may
use up to twenty thousand dollars of the wildlife services line item contained in section 1 of
Senate Bill No. 2017 to implement section 1 of this Act.

How stupid!! Put that 200 grand into the hands of the ADC guys and more fly time and your money will go a lot farther. You will definitely see the snowmobilers and truck chasers out and about if this were to happen

AT 100$ APIECE, 2000 coyotes would be brought in REAL QUICK, legal or not. 2000 coyotes would not even put a dent in the population

terrible idea in my opinion. We have a bounty system here and it's only 25 a coyote. Money could be used better on other control methods.

How do the bounties work? Do you have to turn in the whole coyote...

I hope we dont see a bounty here. I like having alot of coyotes around.

The bounty they are trying to implement isn't really going to effect the population as much as you think. There will still be a lot of coyotes around to hunt. What the bounty is going to do, is bring out the worse in some people and they will pursue them ilegaly to get the $100. The few bounties that i have heard of, usually ony require you to bring in a pair of ears, 4 feet, a tail, or some part that usually isn't used in the fur trade so the person who harvested that animal can sell the fur. The quota of 2,000 coyotes will be met very quick from trappers, and callers combined. If someone knows there will be a bounty put in place, they will start saving the body part of all the coyotes they kill up until the bounty is put in place and turn in a very large amount of parts a couple days after it is started.

I agree with Chris I think a bounty will bring out the anything goes mentallity. And once they realize that 2000 did'nt scratch the surfaceit will be 4000 and so on.

Its a horrible idea and will be used and abused to no end. Slob "hunters", snowmobiles, out of state kills, etc etc etc. It wont amount to a hill of beans population wise and will cost a butt load of money.

Good thing I saved all the front feet and ears on mine this year, I can get into the regional directors office on implementation day and collect my check!

I have it on good word that the G&F may be squashing this one in the Natural Resource committee.

BBJ,

That is what I figured too. It can't/won't make it out of the Natural Resource Committee. It is just sad that a few elected officials even thought this was a good idea. lol

Obviously, these senators and reps took some bad advice from someone.

I agree it wouldn't put a dent on the population unless they greatly expand the quota and years they implement it. But, what do you suppose the yearly coyote harvest is for North Dakota (i.e trapping, calling, shooting). I would guess it has got to be over 30,000. How many do most ADC guys clear out in a year?

Thats the bad thing about bills like this. It was no doubt conceived by somone in a reps district, the rep, not knowing anything on the matter wrote it up to make a constituent happy.

I for one see a bounty like this opening a big fat door to legalization of snowmobiles.

our bounty system, you have to show the hole dog. They put 10k in the pot and when it's gone the bounty is over for the year. Our county pred board funded it with the money that the livestock producers pay in every time we sell an animal.(1 dollar per head) we had alot of people killing coyotes outside of our county and claiming they were killed here. Like PG and CH said, '' theres to many ways to cheat on a bounty.''

It makes it a lot harder when the site manager joins in on the opposing viewpoint and starts deleting your posts! About as "fair and impartial" as CNN!

Try to infuse a little science into the discussion as to why there may be a lot of coyotes now, basic predator/prey relationship, source to sink, etc, they just delete it.
