Well sitting here trapped in a blizzard roaming the internet and praying the power stays on awhile can lead one to crazy ideas.I've been pondering a 260 Rem build but then decided to shelve that and try something else.Bottom line is I just decided to go with the 22 Eargesplitten Loudenboomer.
Anyone have any experience with this Ackley? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.22_Earges ... udenboomer
I've got a 1 in 8" Bartlein and a Savage target action sitting on my work bench right now. I'm gonna give the guys in Pierre some fresh meat (ME) at the 600yd IBS matches this year. I'd go for it but I don't think I can squeeze that big case into a target action. I'm sure the barrel would last at least 20 rounds!!!
250A1,
With that new rifle you can probably shoot from Prudhoe to the fields in NoDak.
I know you're an Ackley guy so here's some neat stuff on him -lots of it stuff I had never heard.
Leadbiscuit,
Yeh but in those 20 rounds you'd get the lead in the matches.
What surprised me is that on the 'Loudenboomer' Ackley only got around 4600 fps-and I've been sort of near that with my 220 improved.Of course we have different powders now but.....
I probably shouldn't have posted that Ackley stuff cause Tim might read it and get the urge to build a 17 Flintstone Super Eyebunger.4800 fps is moving in anyones book although the 52 inch barrel might be unwieldy in heavy cover.

no, Tim would name it the TA/WT Flintstone.17
the more food you have in your mouth at one time, the better you can taste it!!!

Glad you like the cartridge.. I new about it years ago and roughly about 100 other wildcats and ackley cartridges.. I have both of ackleys books vol. 1 and Vol. 2 plus a book named " cartridges of the wourld" and a few others...
I don't hunt big game much anymore so the cartridges bigger than a 243 ackly don't really interest me or serve any purpose for my style of hunting...
But hey if you want to really see a big one check out a museum that has the minute-man missle with nuclear war head. That baby will get youre heart pumping..
Dcoy;
I don't doubt you have been close to that velocity with your improved swift. I've got a 22-250 ai barrel that will break 4200 with 50 grainers and rl15. I haven't read up on the specifics of Ackley's experiment. I'ts funny he didn't try with a 6mm or 25 cal using a light hollow point with a short bearing surface. He must have wanted to do it with a 22cal only??
Yes,a mystery to me as well.Talked to my friend in Mn last nite who's chrono we used 'back then'and he reaffirmed we hit serious pressure signs at 4530 or thereabouts.I actually shot it part of a season at approx 4300.It had to have been the powders he used.
Forgot to add that Jim Carmichel and Fred Huntingtons 22 CHeetah was and still is routinely shooting 53 gr bullets at 4300 or above.Shilen and others still make barrels for them and I know they advertised quarter minute accuracy with it.A straight line is still the shortest distance between 2 points but speed(other than the drug)isn't in vogue anymore for many reasons-a few of which are valid with todays scopes,rangefinders and other tech advancements.Thus,I suspect efforts to 'go there' aren't likely to be made in the future.Its time and $$ without a reward.
