Astro Table

Post by EO caller »

Alot of people have wondered what the moon has to do with coyote calling. If you search ESPN outdoors/astro table it gives you a chart to go by. I've hunted on one of the better Lunar days this month and had coyotes respond and come in no problem. I've also hunted on one of the worst days according to the chart and had no luck calling even when there are coyotes in the area. I did some checking on dates from the past year and all the days that I had success were decent lunar days. I've called great looking fresh country, lots of sign, fresh tracks, everthing you would hope for on bad lunar days and been skunked. On bad lunar days it seems like I see lots of coyotes but there always showing me there tail as they run away. I'm not saying I would'nt hunt on a bad lunar day but I sure wouldn't plan a whole weekend of calling and do a bunch of traveling during this time. I'm sure other people have seen this but just thought I'd throw it out there.

Randy, was that when you killed all those coyotes up on the Rez. I'm looking on my calander and I see it was on a Weds. I know some guys from Pierre who had deer license . They saw so many coyotes, they concentrated on them and ended up getting a bunch. The word is out in town now about the coyote population on the Rez. No place is sacred anymore. :( :(

We must be talkin to the same guys Jerry, a bunch of guys from Mobridge area did real well down there while they were deer hunting. The guy that fills my LP tanks in town here said he got 8 up there last weekend. Our old pilot was up there campin week before last on Fischers hunting and had a pickup load. All looked nice too!! We didn't get to far into it from the east and had them running us over. Wait til the ice gets on the river. I guess that early tournament in Ridgeview had 30 teams, 15 won I think, 11 second or something like that, don't remember all the totals but they really killed a bunch. That country was ready to pop. We will have to go up next week before it gets to late.

Randy, The 4th was considered a good day. That whole week was in between good and excellent. I went out tonite and made two good sets and didn't even get a response to some real good seranading. The last three days have been the worst days according to the chart. I hope everybody chimes in about there weekend to see whether or not this astro chart should be considered a good tool for planning ones calling schedule. :?: Tommorow is considered poor as well. :x

The Jeffrey City, Wyoming hunt was yesterday and today. The wind had us hosed for most of the day but even when we got to a great spot out of the wind it still sucked. Last weekend we had the sweetwater hunt on saturday. Saw lots of coyotes and only got 1. Was last weekend apoor time? Or did I just do a poor job?

theres a chart called the "deer hunters moon guide" thats been out for years. i've never bought one till this year (10.00 $)i've never played into the charts as i hunt when i can and did;nt want to stay home cuz a chart said it would be a poor day. well i thought what the heck and got one and guess what, it is actually quite accurate. i talk with other serious bowhunters and also get their feedback as to what they see and the chart seems to be right on the money. ok, i'm ready for a verbal beating :)

Buck, I am kinda like you, I go regardless what a chart says . A working man has to go mainly on the week-ends because that is the only time he can go. A retired man can pick and choose his days as I do. That goes for fishing as well. My ideal day for hunting coyotes is a overcast day , fairly cold, and about a 5 to 10 mph wind, and maybe just a little snow on the ground. :) :)

Buck,
If you google ESPN astro chart it should take you to it and you can just print it off. Thats what I did but I still can't help it, if the wind isn't blowing 200 mph and I have time I'll still try it. I've called them in on poor days but I've been right on top of them. I haven't had one come from a long ways out and when i've surprised them they usually pop up and look around then scatter ass. But if someone ask's me to travel and go all weekend on poor astro days, chances are I'll probly stay local. :|

I dont buy into the tables when it comes to hunting simply being that a coyote or deer can be hungry at any time. And what about the deer rut??? They are seen alot during the rut but the lunar table says its a bad day to hunt. I dont get it. Maybe there is some truth to it and maybe there isnt, but Im with Jerry, I go when I can because I cant pick and choose my days thru the week.
