Well this morning started at 4:45 with the dogs jumping on the bed and the wife getting dressed to take a walk. I thought, hell can't sleep now, might as well take advatage of the cool temps (39 deg. when I left the truck) this morning. I headed to an area that we hunt alot of waterfowl in, thinking get acouple of stands in before the sun gets high then do some quick scouting, then get my ass back to work
First stand I went out across a stubble feild to sit in so rock piles, never made it there. It was about 30-40 minutes before sunrise, and a lone coyote let out a howl a good distance away but close enough to call too?? I let out a couple of howls back and she answered a couple of time then nothing, waited 10 minutes then started a set of rabbit distress, two sets in she howl agian, but closer. I started howling back this went on back and forth for about 10 minutes with her getting closer, finally I picked her up in a rock pile a good distance off. We howled back and forth for a good 20-25 minutes, I tried rabbit distress, fawn distress and a couple of mouse squeakers, nothing

She would not come off the rock pile, and with the sun out fully, and me in the middle of nowhere

I had no option but to shoot

Thanks to my new Leica rangefinder, I ranged her at 567yrds, never made a shot that far on a coyote, but thought what the hell

I've shot rocks and praire dogs and metal plates, but this is the final test. Dailed it in and got rock solid, and tipped her over dead

couldn't beleave it, all that shooting and prep work and practice paid off. When I walked up to the rock pile, she was spawlled out on top of the rock, legs all four directions! Only had a cell phone pic but some way i'm going to get that posted
Then the day got even better, the next stand was a flop. So I was going to hit one more place. As I walked in, just at the creast of the hill I noticed two yotes on the same trail as me coming at me

Got on my belly, and gave them a lip squeek, and they came running. At 251 (Leica again, after the shot!) they stopped, the jig was up, so I let the first one have it, dead on the spot. The second one jumped strait up, looked at his buddie, and before he knew it he was dead too
My first solo double ever, and three in the truck

That is the best morning of solo hunting I've had to date, now there is a personal bar that has been set. So one more stand couldn't hurt I thought, I was pressing my luck. Two stands later I knew I better get back to work

Man what a great day. Hell I might have a steak tonight a couple of Coronas, and chace the wife around the house

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.
