Land of Plenty

Post by Dcoy »

I'd sure think calling now-at least here in NE SoDak would be tough.Instinct might get them, certain coyote sounds, but I'd sure think 'distress' would be tough. What distress?None around here.Water, lush green grass, crops=abundance of everything.Mice, gophers, pheasants, ducks and hundreds of other baby birds, fawns, name it its here in plenty this year.
Sitting out at dawn listening/watching for geese(our season opens in the morning)I hear an actual rabbit in distress,I see a mink carrying something(baby duck?),on the way home I see 2 hawks with something hanging below them-one feathered, one a gopher I think.
Would have to be tough calling, everything here is fat,not hungry.Good luck to those calling here now.

really doesn't matter coyotes will respond to distress even with a full belly. Inquisative pups active and mobil and adults that just want to take it out on something after being tied down raising pups all summer. My ideas or thoughts are not for sale within 300 miles of Broadus,MT LOL.

Try off beat rabbitt sounds, even fawn sounds, young coyote vocals and the such. I don't have groundhogs within 2 hours of me but has been working as well! We have alot of hoppers too, but if I'm a coyote a rabitt or sheep would beat a belly full of hoppers for sure  plus much easier on the windpipe that scratchy old hopper legs.

In my country and I have seen this in other areas as well, that they will not travel as far for food if it is plentiful. Each area is a little different though. I will staret getting into more prey sounds, less vocalizations as the fall progresses. I will start leaving the dogs at the truck pretty soon here as well.
