You always hear about a coyote?s territorial range. How big do the experts consider these to be?
Also, how many coyotes generally live in this area?

That question isn't quite that simple. There is a lot of varibles that go into a coyotes territory. Such as population density, terrain, food base ect ect. I have read studies where in areas of texas (high population of coyotes) that they have run small territories like a fox sometimes only 1 square mile. A good rule of thumb out in this country would be 3x6 miles or smaller depending on the area (O'Gorman). I ran into a lot of 2x2 or 3x3 back home in ND.

The number of coyotes in that area is going to have varibles also. If the pups have no where to go due to the surrounding country being held by other coyotes then they might stick around if the food base is there so you could have 10-15 coyotes in the territory (depending on time of year). If the population density is low there might only be a male and a female in the area plus a nomad or two.

These things are really going to change depending on where you're at. Locating at night will help you determine what its like in YOUR area.

Just trying to learn what I can. I can?t hunt this year until Jan. so I am trying to learn as much as the internet will let me.

As prairie ghost mentioned there are too many variables to give out an exact size of a coyotes territory. The internet is a great place to start with the endless knoweldge that is neede to hunt these critters. I have spent numerous hours reading studies that coyotehunter has put on the site and the countless hours searching the internet to find studies that have been conducted by other specialists. The more stands you make and the more time you spend in the field you will learn more in one stand than a weeks time reading about them. The best thing for me is get out there and do it cause the best teacher of all is your mistakes.

Yep, you need to get out there at night and listen. Do you have a digital caller, audio tape of a group howl? Even a well blown howler can get everyone going if there mood is right. It may take several nights to get a feel for what you have in the area you want to call. You also can not beat getting out on all the 2 tracks and trails looking for sign. Look at the size of the tracks, how many going which direction. That is all I have done for the past 7 days in a couple of new pastures that I do not have much experience with yet. Once you have found them on the ground and have heard them howl a few times, you will really get a good feel for them. The calling can really be a lay up if you do a thorough job scouting before going in there and blowing on a call. Oh yeah and IF you do not MISS, or get SEEN, or WINDED. Like I said a lay up.

Thanks for all the input. No digital call? yet. I have been calling a little bit the last couple of years, but never really got into it. I am going to start taking it a little more seriously this year. So I ordered a couple of books to read. And I am writing down notes and stuff from videos and I?ll be doing the same from the books.
Hopefully when Jan comes around I?ll be ready to learn the hard way.
Still have 2.5 months to study.
