How many of you carry a shotgun to every stand? I am trying to figure out if its worth it. I see Les Johnson seems to shoot a lot of coyotes with the scattergun and I know some of you guys do but I am just curious.

Thanks,

Jaybic

I do.. its not that bad either...
I have been burned enought times by a dog showing up to close and not were ya want it; to even think of getting on it with a rifle, to not carry a shotgun. When I hunt with a partner one guy carries just a rifle and the other carries both.. with the shotgun being is main gun.

I used to. Dont anymore.

Its in the truck. If I hit a stand where I have real short (short as in short range to my position) cover, I may bring it.

I always do when I'm on stand alone. when you hunt with two or three I find myself leaving it in the truck becuase it never seems to get used... Some one always gets excited early :)

that sounds just like me, take it 10 times nothing real close, leave it in the pickup and they are trying to run me over, hard to shot a moving target, when all you see is hair in your scope, i keep thinking of carrying a traper over and under with 223 and 12 when hunting 2 on a stand

I have a Ithiaca 37 set-up for coyotes but it never leaves the house when I'm out calling. I call mostly alone and have not yet come up with a reason to have it on stand with me.. The majority of my coyotes are shot from 100 yds out to 300 yds.. Just shoot them before they get to close...

I have decided to start taking the shotgun on stand. I just bought 20 rds of 3" #4 buckshot. I pulled the plug on the shotgun and I am going to go pattern it tomorrow to see what I got.

My goal is to kill one this weekend with the shotgun. I don't usually let them get that close... that is until two weeks ago when I called in 6 coyotes and they charged in like their ass was on fire.

Hopefully it patterns well. I dont want to buy the "Dead Coyote" shells. Those are too damn expensive.

I'm no expert, but thats what I shoot out of my shotgun. Works good. I'm looking for some 3'' copper plated BB to try if anyone knows where I can get it.

DustyC.... Do you use a full choke with that load? I have a couple boxes of Black Cloud left over from goose season and was thinking of trying that. The only thing that sucks is I have to shoot a modified choke with Black Cloud because it is steel shot. I just don't know if it would be kind of a wash....3 1/2" Black Cloud BB with a modified choke or 3" #4 buck with a full choke. I guess a guy will just have to get out and pattern both loads at 50 yards.

I never take a SG not worth it, just get good with a rifle, inside 40 yds it should be all instinctive shots anyhow, see the coyote with your eyes bring up the gun pull the trigger. Last time AZ we hunted tight cover and shot most inside 50 with only one getting away that I remember all with rifles, I'll try and post a pix of the area,

Jay, kinda like when we met in the field  a SG would have been 1shot instead of 4..but he did die from bullet not a BB
