Has anyone here ever tanned hides without using all the chemicals and such? I've heard of brain-tanning, just wondering if anyone has given it a shot and how it worked out? Also, any tips on how to get a coyotes hide off the tail without ripping the skin?

I have tanned a few critters by myself before, but i have always used a chemical. The problem that i always had was the furs were stiff and rigid. I now send my furs to be tanned. When you figure the cost of the tanning process at either USA Foxx and Furs or Moyle Tannery, it is actually cheaper to send it to them and you get a grade A product when your done. For getting the tail off of a coyote see the two link below.

I have tanned a bunch of stuff myself but anything over the size of a fox is worth doing it's just too tough to get it nice and soft without shaving the leater down. I was able to get fox and mink and such to come out nice and soft though. I used a chemical always but have seen brain tanning work it's a lot of work i would definetly spend the money on coyote size and bigger to send away.
The secret with tails is pull the bone out of the fur not the fur off of the bone.
