scent control???? .now before ya think ol BnB's has fell of his rocker, hear me out!!! let's discuss the ''STINK" factor. some may think that odor control does no good in a calling situation but i disagree (to a point). in order for it to work it HAS to be done 100%. no shortcuts. (i can hear you all laughing already

)now i don't do this when coyote of fox hunting but have had enough close encounters while bowhunting to know first hand that you can hide from there nose if all steps are taken. i've not had a coyote within 5 steps downwind before but have had many reds very close and i think they can smell as well as a coyote..last fall one morning( wet and dewey, light winds) i sqweaked to reds from about 250 yards to within 6-8 ft. they both were compleatly unaware i was behind a haybale untill they acually seen me . prior to that they were downwind for minites. being a rabid bowhunter, i started taking steps about 5 years ago to reduce my odor and boy, has it payed off. 2 years ago, holloween evening i had 5 mature bucks between 15 ft and 15 yards from me. they all seen me and all went downwind to smell what i was and none spooked. yuo should've seen the one buck, he had his head streached out and lip curling trying his best to smell what i was. now i don't know if a coyote can smell better than a deer or fox (i dought it). a couple years ago the wife shot a huge bear that we've been trying to get for years, he would ALWAYS go down wind no matter the wind direction and would not come to the bait if we were there. even with good odor prevention, he would smell us. so one day i told denise to give me every piece of clothing she was gonna wear that night (every piece). i washed them all in a box of baking soda and hung em out to dry. she bathed in a lake with backing soda, no scented soap. before she went out to sit i sprayed every square inch of here bow and arrows and gear.inside her boots EVERYTHING!!! with scent-killer.. the bear came in early went downwind and came in no problem. it even stared at her while lipcurling, she said it looked real odd heres a 400 lb bear only 6 yards away staring and trying to figure out why it can't smell her ( she's only 7 ft up in a portable stand). anyway, dead bear. here is what i do now. may sound extreme but if i do this routine, i'm not afraid to go into a big buck's bedding area with a bad wind. first off is of course is all clean clothes. socks, gloves, grun's, hat,-everthing!! once my clothes are air dryed, i literally saturate them with scent killer, even my socks and grun's. i spray my bow, arrows, release, and every single thing i take with me. note-- most all my stands have been in place for months so i don't have to work up a sweat hanging them. once my clothes are dry, they get stored in a scent-free duffel. before i go out a take a bath for a good while and scrub every inch with a loopa [sp]?? sponge than i stand up and shower off. i use all scent killer brand products. i don't use any scent on me during hunting season, no colone, deodorant other then s-ker's

i ran ouuta room!!. when i get out of the shower and dry off, i then spray my body and hair with s-killer spray. than into a clean pair of sweats of something for the ride to area. once there i dress into my hunting gear put on a reagualar pair of hunting boots that only get worn while bowhunting and douse them with spray . spray down everything again and go. now i don't do this everytime i go out cuz it's a real pain to do all the time but if i have the time i do. also, i buy scent-killer by the gallons so i do use allot. we do all this for denise to and she really enjoys how close deer come to her without a clue she's there. now i know this would have very limeted application while coyote hunting but if ever there is a time when you have to get it and can't seem to get it done this will work. oh, by the way, i don't use carbon type clothing. i've shot 169 deer with a bow so i been close to allot. oh yeah, i also take chlorophyl tablets during season and it works wonders at cutting down on b.o. also breath, urine, fecal

this system does work to cut down or eliminate odor for a limited time (now stop laughing)

Great article. I agree with you 100%. For those who don't bow hunt, don't forget your rifle. Gun oil can be smelled and needs to be eliminated. I have no idea how many deer and elk that I have shot with my muzzleloader that less then 20 yards.

Bucs, all you need now is to line your cap with tin foil so they can't read your thoughts and you're good to go.

sorry bnb i did giggle when i read your post

I think your steps and measures are great for deer hunting, but i dont think any of that will help you when it comes time to coyote hunt. To my knowledge after reading some literature on them and talking with fellow hunters, a coyote can smell several times better than a deer. Your standard dog has a better nose than a deer does. I saw a documentary on sprays and carbon clothing on how good they work, and every time the dog found the clothes and or person. I am not doubting your ability to kill deer with this method cause obviously it works for you and thats great. When it comes to hunting coyotes you can take all those steps you do and throw them out the window if you ask me. Grab your rifle and a call and put the wind in your face and you will kill coyotes. I use to do that same things you do for deer when i started coyote hunting thinking i will fool there nose. I have only had 2 chances so far to kill a coyote who was directly downwind, and they were young pups in september and october. Great post on what it takes to be scent free for other game though. Remeber this is my opinion and 2 cents so its not worth a damb

the post was'nt really intended for callers to do it as it's a real pain in the a$$ to do. it was just food for thought. as for a coyote smelling better than a deer ????. i've watched deer do some amazing things with there sniffers. also what about fox, had lots of them up close. i also experimented with this with my yellow lab and he failed to find me

Bucs,
If you're a believer in the sprays, the formulas are around on the internet and you can mix it by the vat if you want.Cheap.Its really just cat piss deodorizer. In fact the whole billion dollar industry started with cat piss deodorizer being sold by Bill Robinson aka Robinson Labs.(formerly or originally out of his garage)

Well, well I'll step out a little but normally this is a topic I've learned to bite my lip on and just stay away from. Its often worse than arguing about a guys wife, pickup or dog.
First the easy part.Bucs, there are numerous formulas out there and most are very similar. You can find them I'm sure by doing a forum search at ArcheryTalk.com and/or Bowsite.com.Here's one a friend uses and swears by:
Ingredients for Scent Killer:
16 oz. (2 cups) Peroxide
16 oz. (2 cups) Distilled Water
¼ cup baking soda
1 oz. On non-scented shampoo
(Or adjust amounts to whatever size you make accordingly)
Let sit for several days (1 gallon milk jug works good with lid loose)

Bucs,DON'T tighten the cap or lid down-leave it loose for awhile as the recipe says.I'll go on about this subject in a separate post in a few minutes.

Hey I'm still around checking on you guys once and a while and not much time in the house or computer time anymore............BUT I'll give you my thoughs I used to do all the scent stuff ALL of it it took the wind out my sails so to speak, hell I worried about drolling on myself, coughing, wipeing my ass. I washed ,I sprayed, I chewed shit tasting gum, wouldn't eat certian foods etc... all it did was make me not like to go bow hunting anymore and I didn't kill anything great doing all this stuff, so now I just keep my clothes in a tub change into them and use a little spray, piss while kneeing

thats all and I shoot more stuff cause I enjoy going more. and I still have animals come in down wind some smell me some don't. DOWN WIND IS DOWN WIND, play the thermals.... A bud once told me if you have coffee you smell coffee. if you add cream to it now it smells like coffee and cream, and Chuck has shot alot of animals with his dam stocking cap and the same lucky dirty old blue jeans

Hey just how I see it

Heres one for ya....wash and spray your dogs dummy and hide it in the grass and see what happens

Later TB
