Coyote vocals

How far back in history do coyote vocals go, as far as being used to call coyotes? Was it just howls or did someone use other vocals at the time?

I read somewhere....voice of the Coyote maybe....about guys on crosscountry skis and dressed in white call coyotes over a hundred years ago but it didn't mention in any detail how or if any sounds they used.
