Coyotes Vs Red Fox

Back in the 80's the coyote numbers where very high west of the Missouri, as the population increased the coyotes moved farther out to claim their own terr. plus you also had the transit coyotes that just moved around till they found a place they liked. Mn had a population of coyotes proably way before the 80's and as the population increased they made there way south and west and east. We may also have some that made there way up from Iowa.. Who knows for sure where they all came from..
In central Iowa the callers there have a tough time calling there coyotes and maybe i got some of the same coyotes.LOL

As far them populating eastern ND. I think they were here, than ND got settled. Eradication efforts in the early 1900's (back when we waged war on everything) removed them. Their only stronghold was the west, with its lower human population and more remote locations. Its just taken them 60-100 years or so to adapt and repopulate their former territory.

I lived in N.D. back in the late 70's early 80's and off and on for 7-8 years. If a hunter wanted coyotes he had to hunt west of devils lake to get into them. Fox where pretty abundent from Devils lake and east..

I agree with what barebackjack had posted...same here in my area. Foxes were co-habitaing with the yoties. But now they have disapeared from what I would call the "prime" hunting areas. Since our hurricanes, the hunting grounds have changed to the coyote "only". It's a shame i mis the lil guys. The yoties seem to withstand the natural shock of what weather might bring.
