I have the hot dog too.  I agree that its a ripoff of the Red Desert.  I like how broad the reed is on it, though-- it seems easier for beginners to control the pitch and the mouthpiece has a unique sound by itself.

I've got the Hot Dog with the plastic bell on it.  Wish I had gotten it with the hardwood bell instead.  I personally like this call as a howler as it is about twice as loud as my other howler.  I've been working on getting a 'hurt-pup' sound out of it and can't wait to try that in the field.  It does take a bit of air to blow though, and for an asthmatic smoker 
 this is not a good deal.  Still though, as long as I get settled down after a walk, I like this call.
